I Want Your Emergency by Emily Murman

  • ' I have developed a sensitivity

    to your windy white mouth

    I move in paper bags

    I write sorry

    practically every day

    crumpled in the sheets

    unfresh, unfull

    my heavy head is wormy

    my mood the hanged so-and-so

    swaying on the gibbet...'

'I Want Your Emergency' is a chapbook of contemplation - an exploration of postponed love and togetherness over great distances through the medium of technology. Emily Murman's growing optimism and hopefulness throughout summer 2020, despite meeting many obstacles and tragedies, makes this book truly special and one of the reasons it won a place in our Positive Chapbook competition.

The COVID-19 pandemic challenged this talented poet to re-evaluate her outlook, relationships, sense of place, driving herself to become more stable despite many challenges and uncertainty for the future. Here you will find the real spaces - mentions of Chicago and Lake Michigan - and spaces we've all become so familiar with in 2020, such as the digital and absurd intimacy of a Zoom date.
